Infiniti always referred to the G37 as a luxury sports sedan, but I never drank that Kool-Aid. Sedan, yes. Sporty, check. Luxury? Not so much. That has all changed as the G37 evolved into the Q50. I have reviewed the Premium model and liked it a lot. This week I have the 2014 Infiniti Q50S, which is the sport model, and it is quite a different car than the earlier one I had.
Under the hood, there is a 3.7-liter V6 that gives you more power than you expect. In fact, the engine and its 7-speed automatic produce 328-horses and 269 pound-feet of torque. The Sport comes with some exceptional 19” wheels that are color-keyed to my blue tester and they look awesome. An optional Appearance Package gives you a rear spoiler and a black grill that further enhances the looks of this shapely car.
There are seven different models in the Q50 lineup, but the two sportiest versions sport an S on their decklid badge. The scripted red letter indicates a premium model fitted with high-performance brakes, 10-way sport seats, sport-tuned suspension, magnesium paddle shifters and a unique front fascia – there are two versions because the Q50S is offered in both rear and all-wheel drive. This car is a head turner. Perhaps the great change is in the interior of the Q50S. There is more standard equipment than I can possibly list, but the highlights include a power sunroof, a 3-spoke leather wrapped steering wheel with controls, push button start, Bluetooth with voice activation, leather heated seats and Infiniti’s exceptional InTouch dual display system. Essentially, one screen handles all your navigation system needs, and a lower screen controls the apps. It helps you concentrate quickly on what you need at the moment and is one of the best systems I have experienced.
The screens function like an iPad, pinch to zoom, swipe to scroll. InTouch is customizable and can store up to four driver preference profiles: navigation, audio, climate and app settings. Infiniti says it’ll be compatible with around a dozen apps, including Twitter, Facebook and Pandora. The apps can be controlled via voice prompts to minimize distractions.
Infiniti did a great job with the interior and the layout of the dash. The Q50S is very intuitive with a very short learning curve.
The Q50S drives great and handles like a champ. The steering is speed sensitive and is very responsive. It corners well and in standard drive mode, the Q50S rides smoother than its predecessor the G37. In tight turns, under heavy acceleration, there is no body lean or roll whatsoever, especially in Sport mode. If you did not know, you would swear there was a V8 engine under the hood. Although it appears to be roughly the same size as the G37, the Q50 has a wider stance and sits a little lower.
The Drive Mode selector allows you to choose from Standard, Eco, and Sport. Unlike many of the cars with this feature, you can tell a distinct difference among the three. The Eco mode lets you maximize fuel economy and according to the Infiniti folks, will result in a gain of about 10%. Options-wise, this car is equipped exactly as I would order one myself, just be aware the price jumps quickly. For $3200, you can get the Technology Package which gives you blind spot warning system, adaptive cruise control, backup collision warning, rear camera, lane departure warning, and forward collision warning. It will even dim your LED headlights for you. If you have a wreck in this car, it is because you passed out behind the wheel.
The Deluxe Touring Package is $3100 and you get power tilt steering, maple wood trim, front and rear parking sensors, rain-sensing wipers, and the really cool Infiniti Around View monitor, which gives you an overhead view looking down on the vehicle, which makes it greatly easier to park.
Other options include lighted kick plates for $400, welcome lighting for $225, interior ambient lighting for $240, the Appearance Package I mentioned earlier is $840, and the navigation is $1400 which gives you real-time traffic, weather, sports scores, fuel prices and you can connect your car to your Smart phone and lock and unlock your car.
Finally Infiniti has a competitor for BMW and Mercedes. The Q50S is priced right and overall, just a great car.
What I liked most: The interior and handling.
What I would change: I’d like to have more sound out of the exhaust, it is subdued.
MSRP: Base price $43,200, as equipped $53,530.
Fuel Economy: EPA rated at 20 in town/29 on the highway, was doing better in town when using the Eco Mode.
