Someone once said that “perception is not reality”. I now know that is true. Others, including Dodge some years ago, said “size DOES matter”. Both statements are accurate and pertain to the new 2014 Toyota Tundra. My perception of this truck was that it is huge. Heck, it looks huge, it has a ton of interior room, and a great big in-your-face grill, so it has to be huge, right? Not so fast.
I went to the trouble of looking at the dimensions of a Tundra Crewmax versus a Ford SuperCrew F150, and the Chevy Silverado 1500 Crew Cab. Much to my surprise, the Tundra is 2-inches shorter than the Chevy, and 4-inches shorter than the F150. Surely it is much wider, right? Not true…the Chevy is slightly wider. Then it has to be height, something makes this truck look bigger. Wrong again, it’s shorter than a 4x4 F150, and just slightly taller than a 4x4 Silverado. The reality is: my perception was wrong, Tundra fits sort of in the middle of the three trucks, size-wise.
2014 Toyota Tundra 1794 Edition
My tester is the 1794 Edition, a direct competitor to the Ford King Ranch and Chevy High Country. It has a spectacular leather interior and a ridiculous amount of legroom. I generally drive almost every vehicle with the seat as far back as it will go. If I did that with Tundra, my feet wouldn’t touch the pedals. They certainly did not short the back seat passengers either; it has a ton of room.
Tundra has a huge center console and cup holders abound throughout the cab. It has a center-mounted shifter between the luxurious seats that are heated and cooled. Rich stitching flows throughout the interior and dash, and everything is well within reach of the driver, and all controls are simple and intuitive. Toyota’s terrific Entune system is operated from a high-resolution color monitor that controls everything and includes a suite of apps that give you real-time info on everything from fuel prices and weather to stock prices and sports scores. It has navigation and Bluetooth, along with a great JBL sound system.
Under the hood, you have the 5.7-liter V8 with a 6-speed automatic. This combo is putting out 381-horses. Acceleration is extremely strong at all speeds, I was very surprised, there is no weak spot in the acceleration band. It even has an un-Toyota like rumble to the big V8.
This top-of-the-line Tundra comes super loaded. The few options it has that are not standard are rearview camera, blind spot monitoring, running boards, a bed liner, and 20” chrome wheels. Those items combined will set you back $1400. Tundra comes rigged for towing 10,000 pounds and has a heavy-duty trailer hitch, wiring harness, and trailer sway control. A couple of cool features I love are the power sliding rear window, which drops down completely out of sight, with the push of a button. It has exceptional floor mats too. They are heavy-duty plastic with a removable center in case you have muddy feet.
This third-generation Tundra resolves the issues I have had in the past with this truck. It is quieter, rides better, has a very tight turning radius, and has an infinitely better interior, even in the base models. There is a lot of pressure when you are building the only full-sized truck in Texas, and Toyota has answered with a great, luxury truck, and they priced it incredibly reasonable, all things considered. In fact, it is $3700 cheaper than the Chevy High Country I reviewed not long ago.
In case you are wondering where the "1794" came from, here is the brief story. The JLC Ranch was founded on 4000 acres in the San Antonio area in 1794. Toyota bought the land from them in 2003, and in 2006 opened their 2.2 billion dollar assembly plant that today builds Tundra and Tacoma. Hence, the 1794 Edition Tundra.
