I have to hand it to my friends at American Honda Motor Company. They took two slow selling cars, the TSX and the TL, and combined them into one really terrific car. I am driving the 2015 TLX Tech this week and I will say I am duly impressed.
The 2015 TLX comes with two new engines, a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder that is putting out 206-horses and delivers exceptional fuel economy. This is what my review car has under the hood and this is going to be the big seller in the TLX. The 4-cylinder comes with an 8-speed dual clutch automatic transmission. Acura added a torque converter to deliver undistinguishable shifting and fantastic acceleration in every gear. Also available is a 3.5-liter V6 with a 9-speed automatic that combine for 290-horses, but I can’t imagine why anyone would want more than this 4-cylinder offers.
The new TLX features LED lights all around the exterior, a toned-down Acura grill, and a really nice looking set of 17” Alloy wheels. The TLX features sleek lines, a swooping roofline that gives the sedan the look of a coupe, and a front spoiler. I had a large number of people say what a great looking car the new Acura is.
Enter the cabin and you notice subtle luxury, adorned with wood grain and silver accents. The seats are comfortable, this 5-passenger has plenty of legroom and headroom, and backseat room is more than adequate. The driver gets a 10-way power seat, and the front passenger gets a 4-way power seat.
The TLX features a dual screen display that is simple to operate and quite intuitive. I love the fact that the On Demand system allows you to leave one screen on the navigation system, while using the secondary screen to operate the radio, climate control, etc. The TLX comes with XM radio, Pandora interface, and SMS text messaging function all at no charge on the Tech package.
Other notable standard features include push button start, power moon roof, climate controlled air conditioning, heated seats, and keyless entry. The Tech package gets you voice recognition, navigation, rearview camera, apps for real-time traffic information, ELS stereo system with HD radio, leather seats, blind spot monitoring, lane departure warning, and rear cross-traffic monitoring, all for free.
Acura products are known for great handling and the TLX takes that to a new level with all-wheel steering. When you are in a sharp turn, the rear wheels turn opposite of the front wheels for superb handling. If you want different driving dynamics, choose from Economy mode, Normal mode, Sport mode, and Sport Plus mode. For fuel economy, choose Economy mode, but to take the TLX to the ultimate, go to Sport Plus and you’ll notice a difference in the sound, the steering, and the way the transmission shifts. It makes a huge difference in the driving experience.
The TLX is 3.8” shorter than the TL was, but they didn’t take any room out of the cabin. Acura went to a lot of trouble to quiet the cabin, too, with heavy insulation, and they point out that they closed every hole that might cause exterior noise or air to get through, and they did a GREAT job on interior quietness.
In summary, some of you will opt for the 6-cylinder version and that is fine, but at least try the 2.4-liter first. I would not have been surprised in the least if this review car had been priced in the $40,000 range, but it’s much less and, therefore, one of the best buys on the market.
What I liked most: The value, the quietness, and the fuel economy.
What I would change: The wheels are better than years past, but should be 18”.
