2017-2018 Mercedes-Benz GLC Earns IIHS Top Safety Pick+

The Mercedes-Benz GLC is now an (IIHS) Top Safety Pick Plus for both the 2017 and 2018 model years.

The GLC SUV, which replaced the retired GLK, just arrived in 2015 as a 2016 model. This is the first time for it to go through the IIHS’s rigorous safety tests.

The SUV earns ‘Good’ ratings in the five controlled crash tests. Its standard front crash prevention earns a ‘Superior’ rating while the headlights ear ‘Acceptable’ or ‘Good’ depending on which ones are selected.
The Superior rating for the standard front crash prevention is phenomenal. The GLC is able to completely avoid a collision in both the 12 mph and 25 mph track tests.
The only GLC trim that doesn’t earn the “+” designation is the base model because it has standard ‘Marginal’ headlights. The optional LED headlights score ‘Acceptable’ while the curve-adapting LEDs earn a ‘Good” score.

Mercedes credits the results to the GLC’s aluminum, high-strength steel, and ultra-high-strength steel body. So while the GLC is larger than the retired GLK, it’s also 110-pounds lighter.

The Mercedes-Benz GLC 300 comes in both rear-wheel drive and 4MATIC all-wheel drive. It’s in dealerships now.
