The 2018 Genesis G80 Sport Is An Outstanding Luxury Car At A Phenomenal Price

This week I bring you the 2018 Genesis G80 Sport, a new entry into the Genesis lineup from Hyundai.

The G80 Sport is a strikingly beautiful car with sleek lines, 19” alloy wheels, and quad exhaust.  Surrounding the bold grill is copper, and the front end is designed to be aerodynamic and to feed air into the engine.  A strip of chrome runs between the wheels, and the Genesis emblems are striking.

2018 Genesis G80 Sport

Under the hood, you’ll find a 3.3-liter twin-turbo V6 that is pumping out 365-horses, and 376-pound feet of torque.  This rear-wheel drive sedan will take you from 0-to-60 in just under 5-seconds.  It has an 8-speed automatic with shift paddles.  It is available in all-wheel drive.

As you move to the interior, you see elegant premium leather seats and a mix of carbon fiber and aluminum.  All surfaces are soft to the touch.

The gauges are large and easy to read, and between the tachometer and speedometer is a driver information center that operates from the multifunction steering wheel.

G80 has a nice center console which houses switches for the Drive modes, the auto brake hold (which I love), cup holders, and the controls to operate the 9.2” touchscreen navigation, rear multi-view camera, and the menus to move around the screen.  You operate most everything from the large round knob on the console, including Genesis BlueLink.

Blue Link is a fully integrated and connected vehicle system using telematics to gather vehicle car care information such as monthly vehicle health report, and automatic crash notifications. The system utilizes mobile apps to allow you to remotely start, stop, lock or unlock your G80 from your cell phone.

You can operate the radio and tune it by knobs manually, which is refreshing, or you can change everything from the steering wheel controls.   The air conditioning controls sit below the touchscreen and are easy to reach and operate.  A sliding door opens to reveal a built-in cell phone charger.  There is an elegant copper clock in the middle of the dash.

The Drive Mode switch on the console allows you to change the dynamics of the car, the way it steers, and the way it shifts.  You can choose Eco, Normal or Sport-which is really fun, especially the way the transmission shifts.

Headroom is good, and it has a nice sized back seat that has a fold down center console that includes rear climate controls.  You can manually raise sunscreens on the back passenger doors, and there is a power sunshade that covers the back window and can be operated by the driver or the back seat passengers.

Trunk space is huge, but if you need more, the back seats do fold down.

Standard Features and Safety

It is important to note that everything you see on this G80 Sport comes standard. You get great features like a 17-speaker Lexicon sound system with HD radio, Apple Car Play and Android Auto, CD player, Bluetooth, Sirius XM, and a great navigation system.

It also has a panoramic sunroof, keyless remote, pushbutton start, parking sensors, LED lights with high beam assist, and a hands-free power trunk opener.

The G80 Sport also has heated and cooled seats, power tilt steering wheel, 16-way power driver’s seat and 12-way passenger seat, and the best heads-up display I’ve ever seen.  It is bright and when the blind spot monitor comes on, it shows you on the mirrors AND on the heads-up display.

On the safety front, the G80 offers at no charge: adaptive cruise control, lane departure warning that will steer you back into your lane automatically, driver attention alert, and emergency braking.

Ride And Drive

The G80 rides and drives great, it is super quiet inside, and acceleration is strong, especially in sport mode.  In normal mode, you have yourself an exceptional luxury car.  If I have a complaint, the gear shifter takes some getting used to.  The first few days, I ended up in a gear I didn’t want to be in.

One other issue I see:  If you live in a state that uses front license plates, I think it will seriously detract from the beautiful looks of this car.

This car has the 10-year/100.000 mile powertrain warranty, and 3 years of complimentary maintenance with valet service.  Your Genesis dealer will pick up your car for any service you need, give you a loaner, and bring your car back to you, all at no charge.

Fuel Economy and What You'll Pay

Fuel economy is 17 in town, 25 on the highway, which is good for a large 4500-pound car.

Perhaps the best part is the price.  MSRP is just over $56,200 and for me, this is one of the absolute best buys on the market.

Thanks John, tires have gotten much better and the larger wheels don’t always require such low profile tires, but I hear what you are saying! Thanks for listening to the show.
