2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback Arrives With A Manual

New Toyota Corolla Hatchback Now in Manual

If you like hatchbacks and you like manuals, we have a little something that might just interest you. It’s the new 2019 Toyota Corolla Hatchback, recently unveiled at the .

It replaces the Corolla iM in the lineup. Key performance points to make are a brand new 6-speed iMT (Intelligent Manual Transmission) with downshift rev-matching, along with a lighter, new high compression 2.0-liter engine, and revised sport-tuned suspension.

The Corolla Hatchback rides on Toyota’s new architecture that also underpins the current Prius, new Lexus UX, and . The longer wheelbase gives it wider front and rear track, giving the new hatchback a lower, wider and longer than the iM. The hood sits lower, too, giving passengers better visibility.

The hatchback is now made from TSOP (Toyota Super Olefin Polymer) and ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) – a lightweight material to aid fuel efficiency. It’s also set at a steeper angle (moved 14 degrees forward) for a sportier look. Toyota also says Aero Stabilizing Fins located on its taillights combat wind drone which makes the hatch quieter inside.

Under the hood, the Corolla Hatchback carries a 2.0-liter Dynamic-Force inline four-cylinder engine that’s both direct and port injection. While no power numbers are out yet, that generally translates to more power. It offers a compression of up to 13:1.

The engine is smaller and lighter than its 1.8-liter four-cylinder predecessor, which also helps to lower Corolla Hatchback’s center of gravity. It’s also quieter with less noise vibration thanks to a more rigid crank case with integrated stiffener; a lighter resin cylinder head cover; and a ribbed oil pan.

The engine is mated to an all-new CVT unless, of course, you go with the 6-speed manual gearbox. If not, the Dynamic-Shift CVT has simulated 10-speed Sequential Shiftmatic steps, Sport Mode, and paddle shifters. It also includes the world’s first launch gear in a passenger vehicle CVT. It improves transmission efficiency in lower gear ratios where belt efficiency is typically poor. You can read more about it .

The 2019 Corolla Hatchback can be had in two trims: SE or XSE. Both grades receive LED headlamps and taillights, chrome rear diffuser, and alloy wheels.

XSE adds 18-inch wheels, LED fog lights, chrome front grille surround, and an available innovative Adaptive Front Lighting System (AFS). AFS – available only on XSE CVT – allows for the focused distribution of light in an area that matches the vehicle’s speed and steering angle. The Bi-Beam LED units move vertically and horizontally to provide optimal light output by analyzing steering angle, vehicle speed, and the vehicle’s longitudinal axes angle to adjust lamps.

The cabin features sport seats with revised cushioning, a wider center console, and an 8-inch infotainment touchscreen. Standard features also include steering wheel paddle shifters, a backup camera, and Entune 3.0 with Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa Connectivity. A range-topping Entune 3.0 Audio JBL 8-speaker 800-watt system is optional on the XSE CVT.

Toyota Safety Sense 2.0.

The Corolla Hatchback will also be the first U.S. model to get standard Toyota Safety Sense 2.0. Technologies include Pre-Collision System with Pedestrian Detection, Full-Speed Range Dynamic Radar Cruise Control, and Lane Departure Alert with Steering Assist. It also includes two new for 2019 safety features: Lane Tracing Assist for highways/freeways and Road Sign Assist.
