NHTSA Issues Takata Airbag Update

The ongoing Takata airbag recall is the largest and most complex safety recall in U.S. history, with roughly 50 million defective airbags under recall in approximately 37 million U.S. vehicles. These airbags can explode like a grenade upon deployment, blasting sharp metal fragments into the driver and passenger compartment, resulting in serious injury or death.

According to the report:
  • Automakers are making strides in repairing affected vehicles. The past year has been marked by more vehicle manufacturers adopting sophisticated outreach techniques, the entire industry engaging in unprecedented collaboration to identify best practices to maximize repair rates and significant improvements in repair rates for the highest risk vehicles.
  • Innovation, collaboration are critical to effective recall outreach. As affected vehicle manufacturers have embraced new, sophisticated data analytics, high-impact multi-channel communications, addressed inconvenience in the repair process, undertaken comprehensive dealer engagement strategies and engaged in escalation strategies, such as canvassing, completion percentages have continued to rise.
  • Millions of vehicles have been fixed. Across the country more than 7.2 million defective Takata airbags have been fixed over the past year, and average recall completion percentages have increased by 30 percentage points.
  • But theres still a lot of work to be done. As of December 2018, approximately 16.7 million defective airbags remain unrepaired in the United States, at least 15 individuals have been killed, and hundreds of Americans have suffered serious injuries caused by defective Takata airbags.


Consumers can check their vehicles at or by using the Airbag Recall app, which you can download and use for free on Android and iPhone devices. If the vehicle has an open airbag recall, the website or app will guide the user to schedule an appointment at a nearby franchised dealership as soon as possible.
