The 2018 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk Is a Cool and Very Capable Compact SUV

Don’t immediately dismiss this review just by looking at the color of this Jeep.  Do what I’ve done all week:  imagine in your mind it is blue or red. 

Now on to business.  This week I’ve got the 2018 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk, a very capable SUV that is the smallest of the Jeep family.

Trims

There are six different models of the popular Renegade, starting with the base sport, and topping out with the one I am testing, the Trailhawk.

All Renegade Trailhawks come with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine that is putting out 180-horses.  Trailhawks also all come with a 9-speed automatic and they are all 4-wheel drive.

Looks 

The Trailhawk is all Jeep on the outside with the 7-Bar Grill and round headlights, front tow hooks, squared fenders, a luggage rack, and in the rear it features the Renegade X taillights.  It also proudly displays the badge of honor of being Trail Rated on the front fenders.

Interior

Inside the Renegade are premium cloth bucket seats with Trailhawk monogrammed on them.  Your eyes immediately notice the red around the air vents, the stereo speakers, and the center console.   

The gauges are bright and easy to read with a driver information system in the middle.  I did have to chuckle at the 160-mile per hour speedometer, because the only way it’ll come close to that is off the side of a cliff, but I digress.

As always, I find the Uconnect touchscreen system to be one of the best in the industry.  You operate the sound system from there as well as climate, apps, navigation, and the Bluetooth for the phone.  On top of the dash are large air vents, sure to keep you cool in the summer.

Headroom and back seat room are good, and it has 50.8 cubic feet of cargo area.

Standard Equipment and Options

Standard equipment includes rearview camera, steering wheel controls, Apple CarPlay, capless fuel filler, 17” wheels, and pushbutton start, although it is a little cheesy.  You can tell in previous models that a key actually went there, but now the starter button is fitted there.

My tester has $4700 in options, including the Safety & Security group, which is blind spot monitoring, HID headlights, and a security alarm.

It also has the Cold Weather group, which is heated seats and steering wheel.  It has the Trailer Towing package, and the Uconnect with navigation.

Finally, for $1495 you get the My Sky dual removable glass panels in the roof.  The front one is power and slides back, the rear panel is fixed.  Both can be easily removed completely with the use of a key, of course in the shape of the Jeep grill.  There is a storage bag in the rear to put them away safely.  I love this feature, you get a real sense of being in a convertible.

Easter Eggs

One thing I enjoy about the Trailhawk is finding the Easter eggs.  Jeep designers put cute little design elements around the vehicle that Jeep enthusiasts call Easter eggs.  There are many, and I won’t spoil it, but a few I found quickly are the Jeep grill in the headlights and tail lights, on both sides of the rear view mirror, and on the stereo speakers.  A Jeep silhouette climbing a hill is part of the lower windshield.  Open the gas flap and there is a little spider that says Ciao, Baby!

Fuel Economy and What You’ll Pay

Aside from the hideous Hypergreen color, this Renegade is a real joy to drive, the ride was better than expected, and make no mistake, this is a serious off-roader.

Fuel economy ratings are 21 city and 29 highway, not bad for a 4×4 SUV.  Total MSRP as equipped is $33,165.

Whether off-road or on the highway, the Renegade is a cool compact SUV.
