As if its Performance Blue hue doesnít give it away, meet Fordís first-ever ST badged SUV: the 2019 Ford Edge ST. Itís new to the Edge family and after clocking 0-60 in under 6 seconds Ford says itís the quickest SUV its ever built.
2019 Ford Edge ST
I checked out the new Edge ST recently at a first drive event in Dallas. The short story: the Edge ST won me over immediately. Aimed not just at performance enthusiasts but mammas who want to spice up the carpool lane, this is one fun to drive SUV thanks to its power, great handling, braking and ST-tuned sport suspension. It looks great, too, drenched in Ford Performance Blue.
First and foremost, the Edge ST is about performance. You get 335-horsepower and 380 lb-ft of torque from a specially tuned 2.7-liter EcoBoost V6 mated to a new to the lineup 8-speed transmission. (Thatís 85 more horses than the non-ST engine.) To keep the engine cool, the front grille takes on ST design cues from the Ford Performance team to provide 40% more airflow.
The Edge ST comes with standard all-wheel drive, which handled slick roads with ease during my rainy test drive. Itís also equipped with a new Sport Mode with selectable traction control. Hit the S button on the drive mode knob and youíre going to feel a big difference in the ride. The engine and suspension automatically get more responsive. Plus the exhaust sounds better. Drivers can also manually shift using the steering wheel-mounted SelectShift paddle shifters. Performance brakes are also available.
The Edge ST rides on standard 20-inch wheels but 21-inch are available and there are dual-exhausts in back. Ford Performance badging adorns the scuff plates. In the cabin, the Edge ST has special badging on the steering wheel and on the uniquely contoured ST seats that hug you and feel great with additional bolstering.
Despreporno Show host Jerry Reynolds will be spending the week of November 26 with the Edge ST, so stay tuned for his review and video. Until then, check out our one-on-one interview with Ford ST Engineer Reza Elahi below.
Whatís New for the 2019 Edge Lineup
Weíd be remiss if we didnít tell you what was new about the entire 2019 Edge lineup while weíre at it, which aside from the ST, offers SE, SEL and Titanium trims.
The 2019 Edge looks sportier with changes to the front and rear, along with a wider grille, hood and liftgate. LED headlights are standard. New fog lights are available on SEL and above models. There are five new wheel styles. Silver roof rack side rails are standard on Edge SEL and Titanium not equipped with available Panoramic Vista Roof. Agate Black, Baltic Sea Green, Stone Gray are new colors for 2019. Fordís Blue Performance paint is exclusive to the ST.
The standard Edge lineup comes with a updated 2.0-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder good for 280 lb-ft of torque and 250-horsepower, up five over the last model. Itís mated to the new 8-speed automatic transmission we mentioned earlier, and, because we know youíll ask, yes, Auto Start-Stop is standard across the range. To improve Edge aerodynamics, 2019 models are equipped with active grille shutters, full underbody shields and air curtains that create a high-pressure region of air around the outer surface of the wheels and tires for reduced drag.
