Test Drive: 2015 Range Rover LWB Supercharged Review

Those who listen to the show know that I often speak highly of the Range Rover. After all, I have owned a dozen of them or so, and my wife currently has a 2014 Range Rover Supercharged. The I am reviewing this week has a new wrinkle, it is the long wheelbase version, which adds 8” to the length, all of which is put into the back (second row) seating area.

To clear up any confusion, Land Rover is the brand, Range Rover is the model. So officially, this is a Land Rover Range Rover Supercharged Long Wheelbase.

Range Rovers are known for several things…an exceptional interior, an incredible 4-wheel drive system, and safety. I am not sure why they don’t make this better known, but as of last year, there has never been a death in the United States in the full-sized Range Rover. Low volumes certainly have an effect on this, but it’s still quite impressive.

The big story with my Corris Grey colored Rover besides the addition of the extra length, is the Supercharged engine. Imagine if you can, a hot-looking, large 5-passenger luxury SUV with 510-horses and 461-foot pound of torque. It is safe to assume it is a land rocket when you stomp on it. All that power is locked to an 8-speed automatic transmission.

One big change from the 2013 body style change is the widespread use of aluminum in the Rover. It has aluminum doors, fenders, and hood, which helped with fuel economy and acceleration. To further cut weight, it has an aluminum monocoque integrated body and chassis.

Range Rovers come completely loaded with keyless entry, pushbutton start, heated steering wheel, leather heated seats, panoramic sliding moon roof, and a split tailgate with dual power buttons. The tailgate system works great with the upper part going up, and the lower part going down, with the push of a button.

Everything runs 8-inch touch screen above the center stack, and for the driver there is a huge 12.3-inch screen that features a virtual instrument panel that is really cool. Also standard is navigation system, Bluetooth with audio streaming, and triple-zone climate control system. 

My tester has the upgraded 625-watt stereo, the soft door close option, and trailer-towing package. It also has heated, cooled, and massaging front seats, and the front center console houses a refrigerator.

The long wheelbase version gives you a massive amount of legroom, much like a limo. There is a large rear-facing console that sits between the two front seats that allows the back passengers to control audio, climate control and more. This is an excellent vehicle for luxury hotels to deliver clients, or for private individuals who just want a lot of backseat room. You can raise the power rear seat blinds for privacy.

At just over $118,000 this vehicle is clearly not for everyone, but if you are looking for a luxury SUV, I honestly don’t know of anything like this Rover. Since the big change in 2013, the large Range Rover models, including the , have been hard to come by and very short in supply. That remains the case today.

If you opt for the non-supercharged model, there is also V6 this year as standard equipment. It is a 3-liter supercharged engine which replaced the 5.0-liter in 2013 and will save you $16,800, and it will get you better fuel economy.

Yes, the Range Rover is a luxury SUV, it has a beastly engine that will take you from 0-to-60 in right at 5 seconds, and it is a deadly serious off-road vehicle, all rolled into one. What I liked most: The engine, interior, and 4-wheel drive system.

What I would change: The monitor that operates everything needs upgrading.
